Course Description:
This course will investigate instrument sharpening techniques
utilized to sharpen dental hygiene instruments. Benefits and consequences of dull
dental hygiene instruments will be considered. A variety of techniques to sharpen dental
hygiene instruments will be examined. The technique that produces a superior
instrument blade with minimal loss of instrument integrity will be revealed. Finally,
participants will experience a hands-on sharpening lab.
Course Objectives:
1. Value sharp instruments and the practice of sharpening dental hygiene
instruments at the first sign of dullness.
2. Describe the following instrument sharpening techniques:
a. Stone In Motion
b. Powered Instrument Sharpening
c. Instrument In Motion
3. Demonstrate proper sharpening technique by sharpening a McCalls 17/18 Curet
using the instrument in motion technique.
